Dexter Wansel & Julian Priester

(Spring 2020)

In one of the first interviews for Blacktronika, we are joined by two musical heroes. First, native Philadelphian, Dexter Wansel, best known for his compositions and productions for the legendary Philadelphia International Records. Dexter was the first to incorporate electronics into many of the early ‘Philly sound’ recordings, while programming the Putney & Arp2600 at Sigma Sound Studios in ‘73/’74 to then creating one of the most important records, Life On Mars.

Also, Chicago legend Julian Priester, who was a part of SunRa’s original big band in the early 50’s. Playing with all the jazz greats, including Duke Ellington, but best known for his experiments with trombone & electronics in Herbie Hancock’s Mwandishi sextet.

We are in conversation with both together.
