Flying Lotus & Computer Jay

(Fall 2021)

In the early 2000’s, the social media platform Myspace, was a cultural hub for a sound that was to revolutionize the entire sound of music, through the love of bass, hip hop and experimentation.

Names like Ras G, Nosajthing, Klipmode, Computer Jay were all part of this bubbling movement but it was Flying Lotus (Steve Ellison), who was the first to sign to a big label (WARP) and push the sound internationally. As the nephew of Alice Coltrane, music was always in his blood and childhood, so it was only a natural progression he would go from an visual arts undergrad, to becoming a Grammy Award winning force in music.

The LA Beat Scene rose to fame through the sonic club-as-laboratory, Low End Theory, founded by Daddy Kev, engineer for Flying Lotus, Kendrick Lemar and most of the LA electronic scene.

In this interview Flylo, along with LA’s secret weapon, the legendary synth wizard, Computer Jay, who laid the groundwork for the entire scene, discuss their love of electronics, their journey and influences.
